Last month brought heartening news for Rwandan Genocide survivors. On May 17, 2011, 17 years after the genocide’s end, former Rwandan Army Chief Augustin Bizimungu was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the 1994 genocide.
To honor the survivors who endured the 100-day atrocity and generate an increased awareness from this news, 3 Generations shared the stories of Rwandan survivors, Anne-Marie and Freddy Mutanguha. These particular stories highlight the power of storytelling in ending injustice and helping humanity reach its full potential.
Anne-Marie shares during her story: “I am happy to have found people to tell my story to, someone who I can sit down with and help understand what happened. When I tell my story I feel better. I calm down and feel less heavy.”
In telling his story Freddy Mutanguha told us: “The problem of survivors should not be our problem, should not be a Rwandan problem, should not be actually African problem--it should be the problem for humanity--all the humanity in the world. You come as Jane Wells. If I say I am a survivor you are also a survivor because they were targeting human beings and you are a human being.”
We continue to honor survivors and help them share their stories with the world.
