The profound political uncertainty, the bleak economic outlook shaping Lebanon's future and the recent blast, has driven us to rearrange our priorities, bringing our sustainability at the forefront of all our concerns. This project will help SANAD to sustain its provision of comprehensive free of charge home-based hospice care to advanced chronically and terminally ill patients and their families in Lebanon, while preserving their dignity and enhancing the quality of their remaining life.
Patients who have serious and advanced chronic illnesses suffer from an array of needs (physical, social, psychological, spiritual) and require care that is holistic, aligned with patient and family preferences and goals and ensures continuity of care (National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care, 2019). Furthermore, international studies showed that patients with advanced chronic conditions prefer to be cared for and to die at home.
SANAD is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established in 2010. Its mission is to provide comprehensive free of charge home-based hospice care to advanced chronically and terminally ill patients while preserving their dignity and enhancing the quality of their remaining life. SANAD aims to assist patients in remaining as alert, functional and comfortable as possible within the calm and sanctuary of their own home, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Hospice care will significantly reduce the suffering of the patients, keep them as functional as possible, honor their wishes and preferences and improve their quality of life during their last stages of life. Furthermore, the impact of hospice care extends beyond the patient to involve caregivers and family members where hospice care will improve the relationship between the patient and their family members, empower caregivers to care for their patients at home and meet their preferences.
