Sustainable Actions for Green Economy (SAGE) is an intervention plan to compliment efforts of the government, development partners and other organisations in addressing challenges of energy and the environment with crosscutting issues of deforestation, food insecurity and climate change. SAGE special focus is on sustainable cooking energy solution, tree planting, community gardening, waste management and sensitization on climate change. It will train 100 people to become Green Ambassadors.
Over the years rapid growth in population as well as urbanization has continually contributed to deterioration of the environment. The natural forest continues to disappear or at least deteriorate due to high demand for fuel wood and charcoal which has led to increase felling of tree. In the country, current situations indicate that carbon dioxide emissions have been dominated by the energy sector (for which charcoal and the use of firewood for cooking constitute the most significant sources).
SAGE will contribute in addressing the issues mentioned above especially the very pertinent challenge of climate change, energy and food insecurity by training people to become Green Ambassadors in tree planting, production, and distribution of Energy Efficient Cook Stoves which have been proven to reduce consumption of wood and charcoal by 50 percent. This intervention also aims to conduct basic training on composting and Bio-char production and assist households and small-scale farmers.
The promotion of participatory engagements, practices, formation and strengthening of beneficiaries would ensure the sustainability of the interventions. SAGE will train 100 Green ambassadors; these ambassadors will be taught how to plant trees, manufacture different types of energy efficient cook stoves, compost, and conversion of illegal dumpsites to gardens. These new skills will allow for maintenance of stoves and manage community garden. SAGE will create jobs, and sustainable livelihood
