We are working to secure sustainable livelihoods for 200 vulnerable young women of 18-25 years in Philippi Township and surrounding communities through vocational skills training in agriculture, business, computer education, cooking, fashion design & sewing skills training. Through this initiative, young women from low income communities will be empowered to transition successfully into adulthood and participate actively in the economy and be less vulnerable to the social ills.
Young women living in low-income township communities, who are part of the most vulnerable populations globally; are the most affected by socio-economic factors such as: youth unemployment due to economic dis-empowerment, poverty and a lack of quality education. They often find themselves in inter-generational and transnational sex-relationships which puts them at a high risk of HIV new infection. The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened food insecurity and gender based violence among these women.
Through the establishment of a community farm and vocational training center we will equip the young women with skills in: agriculture, business, computer sciences, culinary art and sewing thus empowering them to find formal jobs and create sustainable livelihoods for them and their families. Family interventions which include food distribution and counseling sessions designed to work through the key issues within the families, creating healthy communication and conflict resolution techniques.
At the end of every 12 month cycle, the academy will have: Impacted over 200 young women. Previously unemployed young women with improved skill sets enabling them to secure an employment opportunity and create their own sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families. 40 families educated on how to thrive in the current climate of socio-economic challenges; enhanced communication and conflict resolution skills thus improving Domestic and Gender Based Violence statistics in communities.
