With an estimated population of 18 million, Malawi is a largely rural country whose economy is dominated by agriculture. However, more than 70% of Malawians live below the poverty line.
Vulnerable to environmental disasters, including flooding, prolonged drought and strong winds, coupled with the regular outbreak of pests and disease, the country's food security is always at risk.
Gift of the Givers executed several interventions geared to alleviating hunger, providing fresh water and support both education and social upliftment.
In 2021, the organisation's team delivered food to more than 50 000 people in the country's food-insecure areas, including some 1 600 children living in various institutions. Gift of the Givers also supported 4 000 farmers with a range of farm inputs. Of this number, some 200 farmers were provided with portable solar-powered irrigation pumps, while 100 farmers were trained in modern farming methods and 25 received fish-farming support.
Gift of the Givers was responsible for drilling nine boreholes in Malawi during 2021, three of which were fitted with solar-powered reticulated water systems and six with hand-pumps, together benefiting more than 6 000 people who previously lacked access to potable water.
