Swim for Good is a global movement that honors the 12km journey many refugees make across the Aegean Sea and wider Mediterranean in search of safety. It raises awareness of the resilience and risks faced by displaced people. Through sport, we call for humane migration policies and stand in solidarity with those seeking a better future.
Each year, countless individuals embark on perilous sea journeys, risking their lives in search of safety and better opportunities. These arduous journeys are often traumatic leaving many with a deep fear of water which persists through time, and calls for organised support and care.
This campaign aims to raise awareness about the inherent dangers of this migratory journey as well the trauma that remains. The Swim for Good event and YSR swim programs empower individuals by healing their fear of water and fostering a positive reconnection with it. Swimming is a key life skill included in national curriculums around the world but that most refugees have not yet had an opportunity to learn.
These swim programs have long-term positive impacts by empowering more than 100 individuals per month to rebuild their lives, restore confidence, and cultivate a sense of belonging in their new communities. It especially unlocks a new instrument to be used for a healthy life, especially as an asset for people based on an island. Moreover, it also empowers parents, breaking fear cycles and enabling them to teach relatives, especially their kids, fostering a fear-free environment.
