The project aims to support the recovery of people and the reconstruction of houses and buildings that where severely damaged by the massive 7.8 magnitudo earthquake that rocked Turkey and Northern Syria. The reconstruction activities will be carried out in Aleppo, Latakia and other cities in Syria. The earthquake and its following tremors took more than 50,000 lives and caused an estimated $5.1 billion in damages. The impact in Syria has been exacerbated by the ongoing decade-long conflict.
On February 6, 2023, a major earthquake struck Turkey and Northern Syria, causing significant damage and loss of life. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale. Only in Aleppo, Syria, at least 400 buildings collapsed and 5.300 are in critical conditions. The ongoing decade long conflict has had a significant impact on the country's ability to respond to natural disasters therefore there is a great need of help for recovery of displaced and reconstruction.
Pro Terra Sancta has been supporting the population since the very first day of emergency giving shelter, food, water and medicines to more than 5.000 displaced in Aleppo and Latakia. The shelters are a short term solution, therefore in the last weeks we've sent teams of international engineers in support of the local authorities to verify the conditions of buildings and houses in order to start relocating people in safer houses and reconstruction activities where possible.
The project will support the securing and reconstruction activities for at least 30 houses in the first phase of the reconstruction with an estimated total cost of 100.000 usd.
