One sunny afternoon, cheers erupt across the playground as a group of children gathers in a circle, celebrating a stunning goal. At the heart of the excitement, tanned and beaming, is Hao, grinning as he high-fives his teammates.
Do you remember Hao's story from last year? After his parents' divorce, Hao and his cousins—who also lost their caregivers—were taken in by their grandparents, along with his father. Thanks to the support of CWLF's school break camp program, Hao was able to join his school's camp free of charge. He not only won a prize in the unicycle race but also spent his break engaged and active—instead of glued to his phone or the TV.
One year later, Hao gained more than just a sun-kissed glow—he also discovered a new passion: soccer. Smiling, he says, "Riding a unicycle is fun, but it's something you do alone. With soccer, you've got teammates to train and compete with!" Compared to a year ago, what truly stands out isn't just his darker skin tone or new hobbies—it's the growing spark of confidence and determination in his eyes.
In addition to activity-based companionship, CWLF's seasonal "care packages" during winter and summer breaks have been an important source of support for Hao's family. His grandfather shared gratefully, "After work, the kids are hungry. Just cooking some noodles and opening a can of corn makes a quick meal—it's made a real difference." Among the items in the box, Hao's favorite is the strawberry jam. Every school morning, he wakes up early to toast his bread until it's perfectly crispy, then spreads on a layer of jam to start the day right.
This past year, Hao didn't just pick up new skills—he also learned how to take care of himself and show care for others. On the field, he's a bold forward; at home, he's a responsible big brother who looks after his younger siblings. To his social worker, Hao is an energetic, intelligent, and thoughtful child.
CWLF has been by Hao’s side every step of the way.
