After Hao's parents divorced, his father took him to live with his dependent cousins and his grandparents. The economic burden of the entire family fell on his father and grandfather. For the past winter and summer term-breaks, while the adults were busy to work, Hao had to prepare lunch by himself. Besides that, he would only sleep, wander around, watch TV, or play on his phone.
Hao is a clever, smart and imaginative child among his family, teachers, and classmates. His witty responses often make everyone laugh, making him the most charming source of joy. But he shows a different side, every time when he rides his unicycle, he concentrates riding back and forth with great balancing. Hao has already win a top-three in unicycle racing, from grade 3.
Hao guides his juniors with sharing his experience with them: "You're afraid of falling when riding a unicycle at first. But if you learn to ride, you will not afraid of falling anymore. Don’t refuse fall to improve!" Many children like Hao can participate in school camps for free because of the Child Welfare League Foundation's long-term holiday educational camping’s fund. These camps provide a safe and stable environment for children to play and learn, keep them away from their mobile phones and TVs all day. The unicycle trainings continue the regular extra circular activities, which ensuring that children do not lose their riding skills after a long break.
The Child Welfare League Foundation collaborates with rural schools to promote educational camps, preventing disadvantaged children and youth from experiencing the "summer lost."
Through “Taiwan Children Nutrition Subsidy Program”, the Child Welfare League Foundation has accumulated supported 1,889 schools over the past 14 years, held 2,687 holiday camp activities which over 64,146 children had participated, and nearly 54,070 nutritional packs have been distributed to help children stay well-nourished, bridging the nutritional gap for disadvantaged children and youth.
In the 2024 Long-Term Holiday Nutrition Subsidy Program, the Child Welfare League Foundation will collaborate with 104 rural schools, and sponsor 185 summer educational camps. This initiative will ensure that 3,381 disadvantaged children have a fulfilling summer, 2,315 summer supplies boxes will be provided to help them stay well-fed and enjoy for their summer break.
The Child Welfare League Foundation hopes to encourage rural schools to cooperates and to organize more camps and club activities during long holidays. This would provide disadvantaged children and youth with more learning and recreational opportunities during holidays, reducing the learning gap between rural and urban children. We hope the public to pay more attention to the learning needs of disadvantaged children during winter and summer vacations. The Child Welfare League Foundation will continue to give resources and actively provide a safe, and high-quality camp activities, benefiting more disadvantaged children and preventing them from falling into the "summer lost" during long breaks.
