Sub: Project report Take part to support street Children

Street Child is implementing two UNICEF-funded emergency projects focused on child protection and mental health support. The first project is helping to keep children safe during climate emergencies like floods. It takes place at the Gateri site for internally displaced persons and in the nearby community supporting over 2,000 children. The project includes activities to help children cope with stress and teaches families how to stay safe. Children also take part in games and life-skills activities that help them stay strong and bounce back from difficult experiences.  

The second projectis a response to Mpox, supporting over 5,000 people in Bujumbura Mairie Province. The stigma and fear of contagion associated with Mpox can cause significant isolation and distress. We are providing mental health support to those directly affected by MPox, as well as to family members and loved ones who are indirectly impacted, with a special focus on children and adolescents. In partnership with state social workers, the project offers personalised follow-ups for all families with confirmed cases—both during the illness and throughout community reintegration.

New Generation: This Burundi-based organization operates a stabilization center for street children and has two houses for those who cannot be reintegrated with their families. They provide care, nutrition, health services, and education. You can donate through their UK partner, Street Action, or on fundraising platforms like GlobalGiving.

SOS Children's Villages Burundi: Operating in Burundi since 1979, SOS Children's Villages provides family-like care for children who have lost parental care. They also offer community support programs, kindergartens, and youth facilities. You can sponsor a child for a monthly donation.Salimadi Burundi:works to support vulnerable children and partners with local NGOs to help at-risk girls and violence survivors through income-generating activities. You can donate to  Salimadi general Burundi fund or to GlobalGiving's featured projects.

War Child Holland: This organization works in Burundi to deliver mental health and psychosocial support, protection, and education for children affected by conflict. 

Contribute to specific campaigns

GlobalGiving: This platform regularly features specific projects in Burundi that support street children. A recurring project, "Give street children in Burundi a future," allows for various donation amounts to fund food, school, and housing needs.

Our Children International (OCI): OCI runs various fundraising campaigns for shelters and programs in Burundi. Past campaigns have sought funding for milk and formula for orphanages, as well as technology training for youth transitioning out of shelters. 

Volunteer internationally

While direct street-level volunteering may be limited due to safety concerns and local regulations, some international organizations may offer opportunities.

Research local partners: Investigate organizations that partner with Burundian non-profits, as they can sometimes help facilitate safe and structured volunteering.
