As the COVID situation keeps changing, we pivot to provide the most effective help. First we distributed emergency rations to thousands on the brink of starvation; next we starting helping farmers to create their own natural fertilizer, to increase the size of their harvest and to sell for extra income. Now that the second COVID wave has again left many without a source of income, we have also started giving cash grants to allow recipients to buy whatever they need to survive.
COVID 19 has had a devastating effect on farmers. Many businesses remain shuttered and supply chains are disrupted, drastically reducing the amount of produce a farmer can sell. Meanwhile, fertilizer prices have skyrocketed, cutting still further into their meagre profits. As many farmers go deeper in debt during the foreclosure moratorium, they risk losing vital equipment and even their land when the moratorium is lifted.
Our initiative to help farmers produce their own natural fertilizer is saving them hundreds of dollars a month. Because azolla algae multiplies so quickly, farmers will quickly produce enough surplus to feed their livestock and sell to other farmers as well. But there is no "one size fits all" solution to the crisis situation Tamil farmers find themselves in. So we are also providing cash grants that will allow them to meet their families' daily needs and buy whatever their farm needs most.
Anything that will help struggling Tamils hang on a bit longer will have a huge impact. The deprivations of the past year have forced many parents to send their kids to bed hungry. By helping farmers get back on their feet and make their farms profitable again, you will be providing them a stable income for years to come. Their children to survive and grow up stronger. One of tomorrow's leaders may be one of the children your gift saves today.
