This project is providing emergency flood relief for 49 communities seriously affected by the devastating floods in Tamil Nadu, India. Your donations will support the elderly, widows and single parent families who are not able to access to mainstream relief efforts. We have already provided emergency basic food rations and would like to raise more funds to provide medical aid, cooking stoves and basic shelter items.
Since 9 November, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry have received the heaviest rainfall in the last 100 years leading to widespread flooding and devastation. Children, women and the elderly in remote, rural low-lying areas are particularly affected. Houses have been destroyed and there is no access to basic public facilities. Most are employed as temporary agricultural labourers and have no source of income or savings to support themselves and many are hungry and homeless.
Our emergency relief will focus on 49 communities providing food, shelter and emergency provisions. Our project partner, ADECOM, has worked in these communities for over 15 years and have surveyed the villages to identify those in immediate need. They can reach affected families quickly and provide them with food, medical kits and shelter materials.
The project will provide immediate relief to impoverished families who have no source of income to purchase food or shelter. Meeting these basic needs will help the communities to get back on their feet and minimize the chance of water-bourne diseases spreading by providing sanitary and dry places for families to shelter and eat. This project will benefit 838 elderly widows, 443 single parent families and 1482 homeless families.
