Summary

Centro Popular para America Latina de Comunicacion (CEPALC) is working with 400 Indigenous and Afro-Colombian children living in the impoverished communities of Cordoba and Sucre in Colombia. Through radio, music, theater, art, and creative communication tools, kids learn how to defend human rights, promote gender equality, and build peace in the country. Together we are building communities of peace, justice, and equality for all.

Challenge

Children and youth are affected by the crisis in Colombia the most. Colombia's machista culture ignores the rights of women and girls leading to increased domestic violence and pregnancies for young girls. 84% of violent acts are committed against children creating barriers of mistrust and fear with many of the adults in their lives. 57% of children live in poverty and 2.5 million children work to sustain their families. They often miss out on a well-rounded education.

Solution

Providing workshops for children that teach them about their rights empowers them to think critically about themselves and their country. Through media, art, music, and theater, they learn about important social issues, human rights, and gender equality. CEPALC's workshops will focus on peaceful conflict resolution, women's rights, gender equality, human rights, and how children can become peace-builders in their communities, schools, and families.

Long-Term Impact

This project will teach 400 indigenous and Afro-Colombian children living in poverty tools to protect and promote human rights, gender equality, and peace. These workshops will also help strengthen their self-esteem and empower them to become leaders and change cultural norms of violence and inequality. For young women and girls, it is urgent to create spaces to promote their sexual and reproductive rights, prevent unplanned pregnancies, and empower them with the tools to become leaders.
