Ideas Beyond Borders, an Iraqi-led non-profit organization, plans to teach and certify 20 university student translators while providing them with a stipend and resume help in order to foster economic growth and empowerment in cities that were brutalized under ISIS.
Young adults in Post-ISIS territories face crippling unemployment and an uphill battle to re-establish inclusive society after years under extremist rule. Empowering ideas on civil rights and basic freedoms are often completely unavailable in Arabic. This project ideologically and economically empowers student translators in Post-ISIS areas while increasing the quality of information available in Arabic, equipping youth and their peers to participate in civic debate and uplift their communities.
This project trains & certifies 20 university students in translation in Mosul, Iraq. Over a semester, students will be tasked with translating materials to promote freedom of expression and human rights. IBB will coordinate and host educational events, deliver resume and professional skills building, certify each translator and also provide a stipend. This will help galvanize the economy, lay the groundwork for inclusive society, and give hope to young adults brutalized by ISIS.
Translators who complete the program will use their certification, increased English & professional skills, and new resumes to access stable incomes and combat unemployment while fostering a culture of entrepreneurship that's desperately needed to rebuild cities in Post-ISIS territories. The materials they translate will help make pluralistic values accessible to their communities.
