Summary

Reading is the beginning of a child's education, but more than half of Indonesian children leave primary school unable to read and understand a simple text. This project will equip teachers working in poor communities in Jakarta with high-quality teaching materials and inspiring practical training, enabling them to spark a love of reading in the children they serve. https://www.sayasukamembaca.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Indonesia-Learning-Poverty-Brief-2021.pdf

Challenge

Reading is the start of a child's education, but one in every two Indonesian children finishes primary school unable to read and understand simple texts. The Covid-19 pandemic has had an enormous impact on the education of all Indonesian children, especially those living in poor communities, who have missed almost two full years of schooling. Teachers need tools to enable them to make up for lost time by teaching reading effectively, providing a solid foundation for kids from poor communities.

Solution

The Saya Suka Membaca ("I Love Reading") program and its partners are working directly to counter 'learning loss' caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. We partner with local schools and charities who are seeking to address the need for effective teaching of reading in their local communities. This project supports teachers directly by providing them with training and teaching materials for the first two levels of the proven, Saya Suka Membaca curriculum. (tinyurl.com/IntroducingSSM)

Long-Term Impact

Reading is the beginning. For the children served it will be the foundation of their education, enabling them to lead happier, healthier, more productive lives. In time, they'll teach their own children to read. We already have evidence that our program works: an external evaluation measured a 54% greater increase in basic literacy skills for kids taught with our curriculum. With your help, we can continue to grow, helping more and more Indonesian children to learn to read, and to love reading.
