Summary

This solution will address the lack of skills challenge for Kenyan nannies. Unpacking this further, I target young girls aged between 12 to 24 years who work in houses as house girls (nannies) from a Kenyan context. This will be done through online technical skills development and face to face in two phases. The outcome will enable the girls to start their own businesses or work in offices depending on one's level of education. The solution will also address mind change in the saving culture.

Challenge

Considering their lack of technical and professional qualifications and the pressing need to cater for basic needs, most house girls in Kenya have to contend with the abuse and undignified working conditions for a meager pay come month end. On the other hand, their employers have no choice but to engage them. How can the two work together? How do we understand this girl's context and handle her from a deep understanding? How do we help this girl see life into the future using what she has?

Solution

First, we work with what we have; our hands and head - We can think & do. The girl will be mentored to think positively. 2. Offered basic house keeping skills to equip her to do this job. Moving on, we will help her get house work job. Then, have her identify an entrepreneurship venture she is passionate about. From her wages, we will get her to commit some monthly savings with a SACCO for no less than 3 years towards the venture. Get her trained to run her own enterprise after 3 years.

Long-Term Impact

Poverty and poor mentor-ship births many social challenges we are grumbling with globally. From a house girl to an entrepreneur. The Kenyan economy benefits, wicked challenges and social vices that results from poverty are arrested. More importantly, we envision a visible shift in social economic status of that family and the generations to come through this girl. We envision a relationship budding between the girls and their non contractual employers. We see employment being created.
