Low Income Girls Lack Access to Tech Education

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Prospective Donors,

Thank you for the interest shown in the Technology Afterschool Clubs for Nigerian Girls project. At this moment, the project has not yet received financial contributions, so the afterschool technology clubs have not started.

In many urban slums and rural communities in Nigeria, girls grow up with little exposure to computers or digital learning. After school hours, many return home with no structured activities that can help them build useful skills. Without access to technology education, their chances of entering fields that rely on digital knowledge remain limited.

A large number of girls in these communities leave school before completing senior secondary education. Some face pressure to marry early, while others become involved in street activities due to lack of guidance and opportunities. Many of them express interest in becoming nurses, community health workers, or public health professionals, yet they rarely gain the computer skills required for these careers.

This project plans to create afterschool technology clubs in two communities where girls will learn basic computer skills in a safe and supportive space. The sessions will take place several days each week after school and will introduce participants to skills such as word processing, data entry, health information recording, and basic coding.

Female instructors will guide the lessons using laptops and structured learning materials. The clubs will also provide a place where girls can remain engaged in positive learning activities instead of being exposed to negative influences outside school hours.

With the right digital skills, these girls can improve their school performance and become better prepared for future careers in fields that rely on technology, including healthcare and data related professions.

We are grateful for the attention this initiative has received and hopeful that continued support will allow these clubs to begin serving girls who are eager to learn and grow.

Sincerely,

Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
