Some summer fun and reflections

Summer at Colibríes Home has been nothing but fun and engaging. This time of year is always filled with pure joy and energy, which is why we try our best to provide the children with interactive and enriching activities for them to play with their friends while enjoying the perks of the hot weather.

During January and February, we had multiple birthday parties, which are some of the celebrations the kids love the most. Usually, the kids whose birthday falls in the same month can choose the theme and games for that day! Water balloon battle has undoubtedly been the most popular choice. We also emphasize the importance of showing love and care for each other, by giving the birthday kids lots of drawings and greeting cards from all their peers.

In the same way that playing and having fun are crucial for children´s development, reflecting on other pondering topics is just as important. For this reason, we make sure that we can dedicate particular evenings to learning about the importance of national and international days and festivities. World Education Day, on the 24^th of January, was a very
significant opportunity to talk about education rights and the process of learning.

On the 4^th of February, we also honored Cancer Awareness Day. We commemorated the Spanish advocate, Elena Huelva, and tried to connect with her journey and personal battle against this illness. Since the age of 16, she had been a spokeswoman for the prevention of Cancer among the younger generation.

We have a lot more reflections like these ones planned for the month of March, focusing especially on International Women´s Day, on the 8^th.

We want to thank you for all your support for this project. It is thanks to you that anything we do at Colibríes Home is possible. We have plenty of plans for the rest of the year and want to invite you to come along for the ride!

A place to call Home

Hi there!

It´s been an eventful couple of months at Colibríes Temporary Home, and the girls and boys have had the chance to participate in plenty of activities, celebrations, and workshops. Being inventive and original plays a fundamental role in keeping the kids entertained, intrigued, and looking forward to new challenges. This is key to providing an environment of containment for these children who, otherwise tend to feel lonely and vulnerable due to the circumstances they have to face, in which they can´t resort to their family for support.

On October 12th, we celebrated the Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity. The children at Colibríes got to learn about native peoples, retell their history, and understand their relevance to our culture. We finished the evening baking a cake as a tribute to the characteristic flag for everyone to enjoy.

In addition, as we have recently welcomed Spring, the kids were able to wish their loved ones a Happy Spring Season by gifting them a flowerpot with a plant that they planted themselves for their families to care for, water, and help to grow.

Another activity that got the girls and boys excited was the opportunity to visit the Local Astronomic Observatory. They all seemed intrigued by the planets and the solar system and fascinated by all the stars. This recreational visit was a playful way of learning, providing the kids with valuable information that will probably be, in consequence, much easier for them to retain. We are planning on promoting activities like this one as we believe they are a beneficial learning method.

We are excited to keep providing the kids with all the tools they need in each of the circumstances that they, unfortunately, have to face. We want to give them a place they hold in their hearts and can remember in the future as somewhere where they were able to learn, grow and experience nothing but happiness. We want to give them a home, at least, for the amount of time that they need it.

We want to thank you for your uninterested support. Without you, all these achievements wouldn´t even be fathomable. We hope to keep counting on you to improve these children´s childhood as much as we can.

Imagine Van Gogh: The Value of Art

On June 15^th, 17 girls and boys from Colibríes Home were part of the Imagine Van Gogh experience, as part of our initiative "Meet Buenos Aires with Mensajeros de la Paz”.

Accompanied by 10 members of the household staff, they enjoyed the immersive exhibition at “La Rural”. Through giant and amazing screens, they were able to connect with the work of the great artist in a different way. At the end of the excursion, they returned to Colibríes Home excited and inspired, wanting to continue making art.

“It was an unforgettable experience for the children. Many approached us and told us that they would like to paint something allusive to Van Gogh when we got back, and I think that´s the most beautiful gift we can give them: to facilitate access to art that has the potential to transform their lives. Through playing and approaching art, they can dream of becoming artists themselves. Art deconstructs its reality and rebuilds it all over again. Colors have music. Emotions do too. That's why experiences like Imagine Van Gogh are important because they keep kids' creativity and imagination alive." Graciela Gilona – Childhood Programs Director.

Art is a part of everyday life at Colibríes. Before going to the exhibition, the children had a beautiful workshop with teacher Conejo. They focused on drawing and coloring their own caricatures and learned about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh.

In a world where several human rights are being violated, at Mensajeros de la Paz Argentina we continue to believe in art as a tool for social transformation and peace, which allows emotional development and the exercise of the rights of hundreds of children.
