This project will help Rainbow Trust Children's Charity to continue providing emotional and practical support to life-threatened children and their families who are facing a new worrying and difficult reality alone. There are so many families caring for a seriously ill child who are facing this reality totally isolated, without any help and support. Having the support of a Family Support Worker is crucial at times like this.
Families caring for a terminally ill child regularly experience isolation as they struggle with their worrying new reality. Some families may have to spend months in hospitals far away from their homes and everyone they know. Family and friends may pull away as they become unsure of how to react and how to support the family. Parents may have to give up work as time becomes scarce due to constant appointments and treatments. The normal that families with a seriously ill child once knew is gone.
Rainbow Trust Family Support Workers help to relieve this isolation by providing the whole family with practical and emotional support. This can include transport support for a sibling who had to stop playing a sport as there was no one to take them, hospital support for a seriously ill child who needs a break from treatment and just wants to play, and emotional support for a parent who needs to talk about their worries and fears to someone they trust and who will understand their situation.
This project means Rainbow Trust can continue to support over 2,500 families per year, allowing them to have some normality, feel less alone and better able to cope. Support can help siblings to not miss out on essential social opportunities, helping their development, parents to feel better able to cope, knowing they are not alone and have support when needed it, and the seriously ill child to get the chance to be like other children and have some fun in an otherwise clinical environment.
