"Blossom Bus is more than just a ride to school. It’s helping me build my future. I am excited for what’s ahead!"

Barsha is a bright and determined 12th-grade student coming from Shaikhpur village, which is 5km from her school. With her board exams just around the corner, she is excited and nervous. This is a crucial moment in her life, and she wants to give it her best.

For the past year, Barsha has been using the Blossom Bus to commute to school. Before the bus service, the long distance and lack of safe transportation made it challenging for her to continue her studies.

"The bus has changed everything for me," Barsha says with a smile. "Before, I used to worry about how I would get to school. Some days, I had to miss classes, and I felt like I was falling behind. But now, I come to school every day without any trouble. I feel safe, and I love spending time with my friends on the bus."

The biggest relief, however, is for her parents. They no longer have to worry about her traveling alone. "My parents are so happy now. They always tell me how grateful they are for this bus service. They know I am safe, and that means everything to them."

As she prepares for her board exams, Barsha feels confident. She is determined to do well and make her family proud. "This bus is more than just a ride to school. It’s helping me build my future. I am excited for what’s ahead!"

“As I settle into my usual seat on the bus, I look around at my friends, all chatting and laughing together. Some mornings, we share jokes and stories, filling the bus with laughter, while other times, we discuss lessons from class like yesterday’s math problem was so tricky! I still don’t get it,” Barsha says, turning to one of her classmates. A quick discussion follows with rapid-fire scribbles on paper, the waving of a calculator, and much gestiliculating. "This bus isn’t just taking us to school; it’s helping us learn from each other too!" she adds with a smile, math problem now explained and understood. The ride, once just a necessity, has now become a mix of fun, friendship, and learning—something she looks forward to every day.

Barsha tells us, “I have always dreamed of becoming a nurse…[so I can] care for people and make a difference in their lives. One of my favourite subjects is computer studies because I know it will be very helpful when I work in a hospital. Every time I sit in front of a computer, I feel like I’m one step closer to achieving my dream. I’m so hopeful and determined to keep learning and growing so that one day I can proudly serve as a nurse.”

Barsha concluded with heartfelt gratitude, saying, "Thank you, Lotus Outreach for supporting me on my journey toward achieving my dreams."

During the 2025 academic year, Blossom Bus has once again ensured that 542 rural students have access to education.

We extend our best wishes to our upper high school students who sat for exams in February and March, especially those in Year 10 and 12 taking national board exams. While exams aren't the sole measure of success, they play a crucial role in shaping future educational and career opportunities. We are hopeful for another strong year of results.

In a country where only 60% of girls enroll in higher education, we're proud that 75% of the 393 Blossom Bus students completing their studies this year are at the upper high school level—equipping them to make informed choices, pursue careers, and challenge gender inequality for themselves and their communities.

Girls in India continue to face major barriers to education, including inadequate school infrastructure, household responsibilities, child marriage, and safety concerns while traveling to school. According to a recent NCPCR report, 39.4% of girls aged 15–18 are out of school, and 57% drop out before reaching 11th grade. Distance to school remains a critical factor, with 27% of girls marrying before 18, often cutting their education short.

Blossom Bus was launched in 2010 to address these challenges, providing safe, reliable, and affordable transportation for girls in rural Haryana and Rajasthan. The year before our program began, only one girl from a minority community had reached grade 9 across 100 government schools in an entire district.

Without transportation, many girls drop out after grade 8. Over the past 15 years, Blossom Bus has helped over 1,500 students stay in school, growing from just 100 riders to as many as 700 girls per year attending three to four high schools.

Blossom Bus To College

Program Overview

The Blossom Bus program, now in its 15th year, continues to make a significant impact on girls' education in rural India. Through our Blossom To College (BCT) bus service, we are proud to report that in the past quarter, we expanded the initiative to support a new cohort of 48 young women from seven remote villages in Haryana. These women, aged between 18 and 22, are enrolled in Mohna College, with five pursuing post-graduate studies. This new cohort represents the first generation of their families to attend college, overcoming the obstacles that prevented their parents from accessing education.

The Blossom To College service, operating on a two-round roster, ensures that these girls can commute safely from their villages, some as far as 17 kilometers from the college. The bus service directly addresses the challenge of transportation, which has historically been a significant barrier to girls’ access to education in this region.

Success Story: Payal’s Journey to Education

Payal, a 19-year-old student from the village of Mahmudpur, embodies the impact of the Blossom Bus program. Growing up in a remote area where transportation was a constant struggle, Payal’s dream of attending Mohna College seemed out of reach. Her family worried about her safety, the long commute, and the lack of affordable travel options. At one point, Payal considered giving up on her dream of higher education to attend a less ideal, closer college.

Then, she learned about the Blossom Bus. This initiative became the lifeline Payal needed to pursue her dreams. With the free and reliable transportation service, Payal applied to Mohna College, the college she had always wanted to attend, and is now studying to earn her B.A. degree. The Blossom Bus has given Payal the confidence to focus fully on her studies, free from the daily worries about commuting.

“Blossom Bus is more than just a ride—it’s a bridge to opportunity,” Payal says. She not only feels empowered to achieve her dream of becoming a police officer but also serves as an inspiration to other girls in her village. The bus is more than just transportation—it’s transforming lives and creating role models.

Overcoming Barriers: The Need for the Blossom Bus Program

The barriers girls face in rural India are staggering. Inadequate infrastructure, household duties, child marriage, and safety concerns while traveling to school contribute to high dropout rates among girls. According to the National Commission for Protection of Children’s Rights (NCPCR), nearly 40% of girls aged 15-18 are out of school, and 57% of girls drop out before reaching the 11th grade. Additionally, 27% of girls are married before the age of 18.

Without access to safe and affordable transportation, many girls are forced to drop out after grade 8 due to the distances they must travel to reach secondary schools. The Blossom Bus addresses this critical need by providing free, safe transportation, ensuring girls can continue their education without the burden of unsafe and unreliable travel.

Since its inception in 2010, Blossom Bus has been a vital resource for over 1,500 students. This year, the program is ensuring that 525 children remain in school, attending regularly, and progressing toward a brighter future. The bus service not only helps keep girls in school, but it is also fostering a new generation of female leaders who are breaking the cycle of poverty and gender-based limitations.

The Ripple Effect of Education

Education is transformative, not just for the individual, but for entire communities. Payal’s story is just one example of how Blossom Bus is creating a ripple effect of change. As these young women continue their education, they become role models for their younger siblings, friends, and peers. In their communities, they are breaking the traditional expectations placed on girls and showing that higher education is not an unattainable dream—it is a tangible, achievable goal.

Moreover, Blossom Bus is helping to dismantle the cultural and social barriers that restrict girls’ access to education in these rural, gender-biased communities. Every girl who successfully reaches college is making a bold statement against the limitations placed on her. Their success is inspiring other girls to aspire to education, and it is encouraging families to rethink the value of sending their daughters to school.

With continued funding, we plan to expand Blossom Bus services further, helping even more girls access education and achieve their dreams.

The Blossom Bus: Transforming Education for Girls

Now in its 15th year, the Blossom Bus program continues to break barriers, enabling an ever-increasing number of girls to attend class in grades 9 through 12 in our target schools! The impact is profound, as evidenced by our students' exceptional academic achievements.

Outstanding Exam Results

We are thrilled to share the remarkable results of our students' previous year's examinations. Every Blossom Bus rider from grades 9-11 passed their exams, while an impressive 99% of students in Hathin and 83% in Solra Senior Secondary School succeeded in their year 12 State level Board exams! The highest score among our students was an extraordinary 91%, showcasing how potential that blossoms with support.

Tanshu's Journey: A Story of Determination and Dreams

Meet Tanshu, a shining star at Hathin school, whose journey embodies the transformative power of education. Living 3km from school, Tanshu has been riding the Blossom Bus since the 6th grade. Her father is a shopkeeper, and she lives with her parents, one brother, and three sisters. The opportunities provided by her school, especially access to STEM subjects, have been pivotal in her educational journey.

"I am very grateful for the STEM program at my school, which has been a huge part of my academic journey. I’ve enjoyed learning through projects like the volcano models and the smart class projector that makes lessons feel real. My first experience in a science lab was in 8th grade when I teamed up with a friend to create a kaleidoscope using three glass sheets. Without the bus service, I would not have been able to continue attending school in 8th grade, let alone studying STEM subjects!"

Tanshu's ambition is to work in the judiciary after taking the Indian Civil Service Exam. Despite financial challenges, she remains undeterred in her pursuit of education, seeing it as a key to improving her life and contributing to society.

We recently visited Tanshu in the well-equipped science lab at Hathin girl's senior secondary school, a testament to the success of the Blossom Bus. Education department funding is linked to student numbers, and the provision of safe transport ensures better funding for schools with the increased enrollment Blossom Bus provides.

Girls in India face significant barriers to education, including inadequate water and hygiene infrastructure at schools, household duties, high incidences of child marriage, and safety issues while traveling to school. Over the past 14 years, we have transported over 1500 unique students. This year alone, Blossom Bus ensured that 525 children remained in school with regular attendance, paving the way for brighter futures.
