Program Overview
The Blossom Bus Program was launched in 2010 to address critical transport barriers preventing rural girls from accessing secondary and higher education. Through the Blossom Bus Safe Transport Initiative, girls from rural villages are able to travel safely and reliably to school each day. By addressing one of the biggest barriers to girls’ education—safe transportation—the project ensures girls can remain in school, and complete secondary education with the confidence to strike out on a career path and make a mark on the world!
To better understand the impact of Blossom Bus program on adolescent girls from remote villages of India, here is a reflection from Radha, a year 11 student travelling on the Bus for three years!
My name is Radha, and I’m 16 years old and studying in Class 11. I live in Rajupur village with my father, Sunder, my two brothers, and my sister. Life in our village is simple, but continuing my education has not always been easy.
My school is about four kilometers away. Reaching there every day was difficult. I had to walk, and often worried about reaching school safely and on time.
The first time I stepped onto the Blossom Bus, I felt relief and happiness. It felt as if someone had made the road to my dreams smoother. Now every morning I happily climb aboard with my school bag, greeting my friends as we begin the journey together.
One of the most special parts of the ride is meeting Neelam, our mentor on the bus. She welcomes us with a warm smile every day, takes attendance, asks how we are doing, and talks to us kindly about school, our studies, and even our small worries. It feels comforting to know someone listens and encourages us before we reach school.
At school we do not have female staff members, so when we need guidance or someone to talk to, Neelam supports us. Whether it is a small problem or something we feel shy to discuss, she is always there.
Our bus rides are filled with laughter, conversations with friends, and the beautiful sight of fields passing by in the morning sunlight. Because of the Blossom Bus, I can reach school safely and on time and focus on my studies. The journey that once felt long and uncertain now feels hopeful.
I am proud to be studying in Class 11 and moving closer to my dreams. I want to build a good future and make my family proud.
From my heart, I am deeply thankful.
