Peaches, the Virginia opossum, is the newest Wildlife Ambassador here at Piedmont Wildlife Center! Peaches’ mother was sadly hit by a car, but Peaches was safe in her mother's pouch and survived the accident. She was brought to a rehabilitation facility, where she was cared for and showed no signs of injuries! Unfortunately, Peaches imprinted on the rehabber, making her unfit for release back into the wild. Now, Peaches is 6 months old and has been a great ambassador!

Peaches joins her fellow Wildlife Ambassadors and visits schools and events across the Triangle. She teaches everyone she meets about the misunderstood Virginia Opossum, showing off her amazing adaptations and teaching them that opossums play an important part of the ecosystem and are not as scary or dirty as people may think! When Peaches is not educating the public about Virginia Opossums, she enjoys spending her time exploring her outdoor enclosure or running on her wheel.

We recently celebrated World Turtle Day here at Piedmont Wildlife Center with nearly 200 guests joining us to learn about North Carolina’s state reptile—and one of our threatened species—the diamondback terrapin.

During the event, visitors had the chance to meet our animal ambassadors, test their field survey skills, guess the number of gummy turtles in a jar, paint turtle-themed rocks, and explore our collection of turtle specimens. We were thrilled to partner with The Morning Times, who donated delicious turtle cookies, and Meat & Graze, who created a fun, turtle-themed charcuterie board for everyone to enjoy.

In addition to PWC’s activities, we were joined by the Turtle Rescue Team and SWANEC. NC State’s Turtle Rescue Team shared their ongoing work rehabilitating injured box turtles and teaching the public how to coexist with these remarkable reptiles. SWANEC—a youth-led nonprofit founded by high schoolers passionate about conservation—educated guests on the impact of invasive plant species in North Carolina and how they affect ecosystems our native turtles rely on.

The event concluded with a crowd-favorite: a turtle vs. hare race! Two of our box turtles, Shelly and Vinny, raced against one of our rabbit ambassadors. Vinny crossed the finish line first to claim the crown!

This event is just one example of how Piedmont Wildlife Center brings together organizations and community members to learn about native wildlife, promote conservation, and have fun while doing it. At the heart of our mission are our animal ambassadors. These incredible animals help foster meaningful connections and inspire a love of nature. They represent their species and the environments we strive to protect. For all that they do, we owe them the best care. It is through our support that we continue to provide them with the best homes, enrichment, food, and medical care possible.
