Can you take this child?

"Can you take this child?"
This is a shockingly common question we've heard from parents and community leaders. When the mother of a child is too poor to provide food, the first solution considered by well-meaning people in their life is often, "who can raise this child instead of the parent?" But the question should be, "how can we help the parents or mother get to a place where they can raise their own child?"
Recently we were approached by someone wondering if we could help a family by raising their twin newborn boys. Not long ago, the father was released from prison on minor charges, but struggled to find anyone willing to hire him due to his criminal record. The family was homeless and taking care of a daughter, twin newborn boys, and a blind grandmother until the community came together to help build them a basic home. The mother couldn't provide enough breast milk to her premature sons and the lack of nutrition was immediately obvious during our first home visit.
Between unemployment and lack of food, the immediate solution was to find someone else to raise the kids. Thankfully a local leader we have a relationship with stepped in to help the father find work and between The Light Center and community support, the parents are able to keep their children and provide enough food for their family. Thank you for helping us keep children together with their families!

Prevention Through Education

One of the simplest, yet effective ways of preventing various forms of abuse and exploitation of children is to help them stay in school. The problem many families face here is simple; work provides income, while school is an expense they can’t afford so they have their children work. A nearby government school may be tuition free, but the simple cost of uniforms, supplies, and food can be a high enough barrier to keep kids out of school.
We are partnering with another project in our foundation network called Education Matters that provides scholarships to help remove the burden of school expenses. This program has been going on for quite a few years, and nearly every single scholarship recipient has gone on to receive college degrees which is incredible! Each child is matched with a mentor, which has been a key to making the program a success. The Light Center and Education Matters are sharing the cost of supporting some children in our area so thank you for helping us provide this opportunity to families in Ubon.
