Challenge

According to the national survey on the nutritional status and mortality based on the SMART method carried out by the Ministry of Public Health and Aids Control in Burundi and the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Development Cooperation supported by USAID, UNICEF and WFP (ENSNMB, 2018), the incidence of chronic malnourishment is 57 percent with a very high incidence for children aged 0-5. From this survey, the province of Muramvya alone the trend is between 50.7 and 59.6%.

Solution

According to Irenee Modeste BIDEMA, all parts of the Moringa plant are rich in vitamins, mineral salt and protein if these parts are used as food supplements. The Humanitarian Action for the Promotion of Medicinal Plants and the Protection of the Environment through the financing of this project will support the beneficiaries of this objective by spreading 50,000 Moringa plants on their farms.

Long-Term Impact

In the long term, this project will facilitate direct and indirect beneficiaries to meet their primary needs (housing, health and balanced nutrition). As Moringa is an agribusiness and leguminous shrub, this project will help improve fertility and protect the soil. Economically, Moringa is a source of income for households and will participate in the creation of income-generating activities
