Dear GlobalGiving Community,
We hosted a special all female screening in Tombo engaging with the women of the fishing industry including fish processors and boat owners because women are actually the key drivers of the fishing industry but due to customs often do not speak or share openly in male dominated spaces. We truly wanted to allow women the opportunity to fully express themselves in a closed environment free from the men and to talk about the issues that are particular to them. We discussed the main issues of the film such as fish scarcity, loss of livelihood, changing weather patterns, forced migration and family separation.
The audience reacted very positively to the film. They discussed how family separation not just effects their livelihoods are many times fishermen and the women who process and sell fish are many times married and work together to make a living for their family and how the removal of these fishermen from the home as they go in search of a better living has been detrimental as they often go an then abandon these women and their children.
The community also proposes to have a representative of the women’s group present when it comes to policy and decision making in the fishing sector. They want to ensure their voices are at the table as they do represent a huge portion of the sector.
We appreciate your continued support of this project.
With deepest gratitude,
Barmmy
