A healthy ocean is vital to our existence. Yet, the ocean faces pressures from climate change, overfishing and pollution. Now a new threat looms. If allowed to go ahead, deep-sea mining will irreversibly destroy ancient habitat, have unknown consequences on the ocean systems that sustain us, and will disturb locked-away carbon. The Ocean and Us is campaigning to secure a moratorium on deep-sea mining through advocacy and awareness raising, leveraging music, arts and sports for the deep sea.
Deep-sea mining threatens fragile ecosystems in the High Seas- the ocean beyond national jurisdiction, making up half our planet. Massive machines would destroy seafloor habitat, release sediment plumes, and risk accelerating climate change. The Clarion-Clipperton Zone (Pacific Ocean) is the first target. Scientists warn of irreversible loss of nature and disruption of ocean processes. Yet, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) faces pressure to approve mining. The time to act is now.
We have delayed a decision on deep-sea mining, demonstrating that our global voice matters. The Ocean and Us leveraging arts, music, and sports to amplify resistance. We're gathering support for a moratorium through our Deep-Sea Mining Declaration (165+ signatories) and petition (nearly 350,000 signatures). The Ocean and Us is an official observer to the ISA where we bring your voice directly to directly to decision makers. With your help, we can stop this industry before it starts.
Preventing deep-sea mining will protect ecosystems, preserve biodiversity, and safeguard the ocean's role in climate regulation. A global moratorium allows time for research, better governance, and alternatives. Already, 38 nations, 50+ companies, 1000 scientists, and 40 financial institutions support it. But we must keep the momentum. We can still prevent this industry - if we act now. Join us to protect the deep sea.
