Why We Speak: Help Spread Refugee Stories

“Lost in Lebanon,” a 3 Generations documentary that documents the stories of four Syrians who escaped the violence of their home country, is continuing its successful run at film festivals worldwide and promoting policy change in the wake of the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis. In early December, the film will be opening the International Organization for Migration festival in Geneva, and it will have its Austrian premiere at This Human World. Then, it will be screened at the EU Human Rights Film Days in Turkey and by Human Rights Watch in Beirut.

The documentary shows viewers the fate of Syrians after the immediate wake of their displacement, when they are left disillusioned and stateless. It therefore allows us to grasp the plight of refugees in regions beyond Syria, from those fleeing persecution in Myanmar to victims of increased environmental disasters due to climate change. These are issues that 3 Generations continues to monitor and document as human rights issues.

The people of Syria are suffering through the seventh consecutive year of civil war. Just recently, on 23rd of August, Bashar Al-Assad’s special forces reclaimed the city of Homs, once regarded as the “capital of the revolution,” from ISIS soldiers. Four civilians were killed in the battle.

Lost in Lebanon, a film produced by 3 Generations, chronicles the stories of four Syrians who fled to Lebanon to escape this sort of heartbreaking, ongoing violence. The Guardian calls the film “a moving, galvanising work that tackles this horrific humanitarian crisis with a fresh eye and ear.” CineVue says that it, “underlines to marked effect that false Western perceptions and indifference must change.”

3 Generations was proud to screen the film for the first time in North America on the 15th of June at the Humans Rights Watch Film Festival. Lines formed down the block in front of the IFC Center in New York City with people waiting to be a part of the premiere. After the screening, directors Sophia and Georgia Scott led a discussion panel along with the senior policy advisor for the UN Refugee Agency, Firas Kayal.

On the 2nd of September, Lost in Lebanon will be screening at the Lebanese Film Festival in Sydney.
