All the strength inside you

Today, over 84 million people worldwide are displaced from their homes or country of origin. Each one has an important story to tell. The global refugee crisis continues to represent a pressing humanitarian emergency. For more than 15 years, the core of our mission has prioritized elevating the voices of refugees and demanding change to ensure that their stories are acknowledged and recorded.

As part of documenting survivors' testaments, we had the honor of recording Ngawang Sangdro, a Tibetan Nun who escaped from China. Ngawang shared with us in her own words:

“At that time, there were often protests, and people would go to the streets and say “Free Tibet” and things like that. One time, I asked my father if it would help anything if I did something like that, and my father said, “Yes, of course. If you protested with all the strength inside you, it would help things”. I was 13 in 1990, I was at a protest, and that was the first time I was arrested.”

Ngawang’s total sentence term was 23 years, a result of 3 sentence extensions within prison on top of her original sentence. She is China’s longest-serving female prisoner convicted of counterrevolution and one of the youngest people to be convicted of counterrevolution in China. Ngawang was released on October 17, 2002. Currently, Ngawang continues her activism by discussing her experiences with restricted freedoms and her motivation behind peaceful protesting in Tibet to bring awareness to the country’s continuous struggle for freedom.

3G continues to spread awareness about the plight of refugees and document their stories so they receive the support and compassion they deserve.
