We are launching a campaign to build Rwanda's first Centre for Animal Welfare - the WAG Centre for Humane Dog Population Management and Animal Welfare. After years of rapid growth, our organization is ready to take a bold leap forward with our most visionary project yet: a custom built centre that will advance animal welfare, humane dog population management, and community education across Rwanda.
Ultimately, WAG needs a permanent home! Over the last few years, we have been forced to move multiple times due to landlord decisions, expansion of the city, and logistics, the most recent being the closing of our current shelter access road. This precedes expropriation of our shelter at a later, as yet undetermined, date. We view this as an opportunity to settle permanently in a new site, providing a safe home for our rescues and which will better reflect the multi-faceted nature of our work.
We will create the WAG Centre for Humane Dog Population Management and Animal Welfare, the first of its kind in Rwanda. This will be an innovative, dynamic hub for animal welfare, addressing why dogs are on the street in the first place. It will include a shelter for the rehabilitation of stray and injured dogs, with a capacity for 70-80 dogs, a clinic providing essential community veterinary services such as spays and neuters, and a research and education space.
Long term, this Centre will serve as a model for HDPM in Rwanda, transforming the lives of dogs and communities. We are the main advocate in Rwanda for peaceful coexistence between dogs and humans. The WAG Centre will address pressing, on-the-ground needs, including rehabilitation and essential vet care for dogs in need, as well as designing and implementing high-level national HDPM strategies, ultimately transforming how dogs are perceived and treated in Rwanda.
