Excellence Foundation for South Sudan, through The ClarityDesk project with support from Africtivistes in the context of Digitalise Youth and AHEAD Africa, led by the Digital Democracy Initiative have trained more than one hundred journalism clubs and media students from two universities and five secondary schools in South Sudan's capital, Juba.
The schools reached include Starford International University, Smooth Star Academy Secondary School, Elite High School, Hilltop High School, University of Juba, Sacred Heart and Glorious Baptist Academy Secondary Schools.
The students were trained on how to debunk toxic misinformation during elections, the basics of online safety, media monitoring and social listening.
"Before this training, scrolling through social media during election season felt like navigating a minefield of rumours. Now, armed with fact-checking tools, I feel empowered to stop the spread of toxic misinformation and protect my community's truth," said a student Participant, University of Juba
Jibi Moses Korsuk, The ClarityDesk project manager, says, "Empowering over one hundred students across Juba's universities and secondary schools isn't just about teaching media skills; it is about building a generation of digital watchdogs who will champion online safety and democratic integrity in South Sudan."
"Our journalism students needed more than theory—they needed practical skills in social listening and online safety. This initiative has transformed how our students engage with the digital world, turning them from passive consumers into critical thinkers," a School Administrator, Starford International University, said.
The organisation will continue to support the media clubs and students in those schools reached and beyond to enhance their skills in information integrity over time.
