Summary

There is very little support for disabled children and their families in Moldova, particularly in rural areas. Most often a diagnosis only brings stigma rather than the assistance that can help children reach their potential. So the Dorintsa centre (The Wish) is the only place local families can turn. We provide an individualised multi-disciplinary programme for each child including physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, play therapy and accessible education.

Challenge

There are 353 children registered as disabled in the Calarasi region. Many are not able to access education and lead isolated lives. In Soviet times disabled children were usually taken from their families and housed in institutions. Moldova still struggles to provide community-based therapy, support and education. Moldova is Europe's second poorest country. Stigma and lack of resources mean that the services disabled children need to fulfil their potential are very scarce.

Solution

30 children with Down syndrome, autism and learning difficulties aged 3-18 will attend regular sessions at our centre in Calarasi. We lower barriers to families taking part by providing transport if needed, and working with parents to reduce stigma. Each child is assessed and follows a personalised programme of therapy according to their needs. Within a year we see their oral communication skills, life skills, physical stamina and literacy skills improving.

Long-Term Impact

Your support will improve the quality of life of children with disabilities from the Calarashi region, giving them the chance to communicate, make friends, and benefit from social integration and greater independence. Children with disabilities who are at risk of dropping out of school or kindergarten will be encouraged to attend and/or given alternative educational support. Families will be given specialist advice and will be empowered to find the most suitable education for their children.
