One cow, support, training, and encouragement to build on existing assets changed everything for one family.
With a physical disability that limited her strength and movement, Phanna*’s mother felt discouraged. Several hours away, his father worked in the city doing minimally paid, unsafe construction. Phanna, a toddler, has cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and acute bronchitis that went untreated due to his family’s lack of finances.
A year ago, as the family slid into hopelessness from their lack of options, their community leaders knew they needed support and reached out to Children In Families. As we evaluated their situation, we walked alongside them to come up with many small steps that would improve their quality of life and get Phanna the help he needed for his untreated medical conditions.
As CIF trained Phanna’s mother in hygiene, child’s rights, and nutrition; through our ABLE program she learned how to care for a child with disabilities. At that time, the monthly stipend CIF gave to relieve their financial burden allowed her husband to return home. Finding local work, he used his free time to fish and garden, bringing home more income and food. Both parents are now actively involved in CIF’s training and caring for their two children. Meanwhile, improvements in safety and hygiene were made to their living conditions.
Since Phanna’s mother needed to be nearby to care for his needs, CIF helped her expand her chicken-raising and vegetable garden. Recently, the family requested financial assistance to get a cow. On their own initiative, they took stock of their situation and determined that the grassy fields around their home would be a great place to keep a few cows to provide further income.
CIF provided some of the funds, while they showed their commitment by stepping up with small savings and building a shed in which the cow could live.
With coordination from CIF, Phanna has received specialized services from two NGOs in his province and treatment at a children’s hospital in Phnom Penh.
Although only a year has passed since CIF took on the family’s case, we’ve seen so much improvement that our caseworkers are taking steps to gradually prepare for a successful case closure in the future.
A local community leader, Mrs. Sarith, told our staff, “Being a local authority, we [leaders] commit to continue supporting Phanna and his family even after CIF closes the case in the future. We will monitor (Phanna's) condition, encourage the family for child preservation, and connect them to appropriate government support services and NGOs. Thank you, CIF, for supporting vulnerable children and families in our communities. We commit to closely cooperating with you for the best interest of our children and community.”
