Since last September the Emfasis Team has been conducting an urgent Relief Initiative to support the victims of the unprecedented floods in Thessaly Region.
During this period of time, we have managed to complete more than 10 missions to more than 15 affected areas, which suffered from severe damages in social, economical & psychological level.
We have spent more that 300 hours in the field, with continuous on-site cross-checks & recording of needs as well as in-person deliveries of first-aid items.
Up until now, we have supported the flood-affected population by:
1. purchasing household electronic devices (ex kitchen, washing maching, refrigerators etc)
2. purchasing furniture (ex wardrobes, beds & matresses)
3. providing water-pressure cleaners & detergents/disinfectants for indoor and outdoor use
4. providing specially packaged individual kits with long-life food items, baby & child nutritional snacks, personal hygiene products as well as cleaning & mosquito repellent products
5. providing food stamps & DIY stores' gift vouchers
At the same time, we have implemented several educational trainings on the subject of supply management & volunteering coordination, with the aim to mobilize the communities & build their capacity in order to be able to organize & coordinate their future steps.
We are currently focusing on the relief & empowerement of socially vulnerable families, such as single-parent families and/or families with disabled members. Our aim for the following months is not only to continue providing them with the essential materials but also to intensify our psychosocial advisory sessions, so that we reduce the mental trauma & help them regain their self confidence. What is more, we have set out to support them both in legal and employment rehabilitation.
This way, we drastically eliminate the risk of the imminent homelessness that threatnes them.
Having said that, it is extremely important to secure the neccesary sources so as to stand by them in the long term.
Let's spread the message: When the flood waters rise, we rise up as a community!
