In June we had the chance to co-organize a volunteer-led theater performance in Mouzaki, created mainly by people from the local community. The play focused on women’s experiences and how social, economic, and environmental changes are shaping everyday life. It wasn’t just about making a performance happen—it gave people space to share concerns, exchange ideas, and reconnect as a community. Each person involved brought something different, and that’s what made it feel real and meaningful.
One of the themes we explored was ecological anxiety, something many of them have felt more strongly since the devastating floods caused by Storm Daniel in 2023. Including it in the play opened the door to honest conversations that often don’t happen elsewhere. But more than anything, the whole process reminded us what resilience can look like when it comes from within the community.
They didn’t have professional resources, but working together brought out skills, ideas, and a level of commitment that carried the project forward. Being involved in something creative gave them a sense of purpose and momentum. It showed that through the arts, they can stay connected, reflect on what they’ve been through, and keep moving forward as a community.
