Subject :Displaced by devastating floods in Burundi
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), residents have been forced to seek refuge in schools, churches or sometimes in makeshift roadside shelters in the rural area of Gatumba, in the province of Bujumbura. In addition to losing their homes, many lost their livelihoods as floods destroyed crops and damaged businesses.
This situation follows the displacement of 1,000 households in the same area in April 2023, according to the IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM).
“The consequences of climate-related disasters require continued and vital assistance for affected communities, and more particularly for internally displaced people. Financial support is urgently needed to help the most vulnerable and leave no one behind,” said Vijaya Souri, IOM Head of Mission in Burundi, in a statement.
In recent weeks, torrential rains have caused devastating floods in the Great Lakes region of East Africa, affecting not only Burundi but also the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, displacing thousands of people and causing deaths.
The situation is really very critical, we need emergency help to start supporting people who need it.
