Burundi Facing an Intensifying Climate Crisis
Located in the heart of the Great Lakes region, Burundi, known as one of the poorest countries in the world, is also one of the most exposed to the effects of climate change.
Since January 2024, due to torrential rains, the waters of Lake Tanganyika, Africa's second largest lake, have been rising by 10 cm every week.
For the population, the nightmare seems to be repeating itself: their homes, schools, and markets are flooded.
In the town of Gatumba, for example, in the west of the country, the floods of 2021-2022 had already caused significant damage. And, two years later, Gatumba is once again experiencing the same dramatic situation.

Save Life Make Difference mobilized on the ground
Since the beginning of the El Niño phenomenon, UNICEF teams have been working to assist populations affected by the disasters it causes.
Since access to water is crucial to limit the risk of epidemics, we have trucked in water and begun repairing damaged infrastructure. UNICEF and its partners have provided medical supplies to meet the needs of the population and respond to the cholera epidemic.
While 200 schools were damaged by the floods, we also distributed supplies to students whose school year was interrupted.
Your donation is essential to continue our work.
Heavy rains are expected to continue hitting Burundi until the end of May. The death toll could therefore rise considerably.
Needs are evolving at an alarming pace and require additional resources. By donating today to our emergency fund, you are giving us the opportunity to continue our efforts on the ground, for every child.
