A valuable opportunity!

By Ilaria Ventura | Project Assistant

Being an indian woman is difficult!
Being an indian woman is difficult!

Raising a child is equivalent to watering the neighbor's garden". These are the words of a famous Indian saying that explains how Indian women are discriminated before they are born. In India, where the patriarchal system is very deep-rooted, girls are considered a burden for their family: having a daughter does not bring gain, indeed asks a continuous sustenance.

This concept means that there is a preference for male children and girls are discriminated, less cared of and fed. Forced to join prematurely in arranged marriages, women are denied the opportunity to receive adequate education and are destined to depend first on their fathers and then their husbands, thus not being able to achieve economic autonomy.

The "Threads of hope" project aims to give hope to these women, an opportunity to redeem both on a personal and social level. Tailoring and computer courses provide girls, who have often had to leave school, professional skills and help develop their empowerment.

Currently there are 43 girls who attend the computer course and 22 those who follow the tailoring course: the desire to learn is so many and many women demonstrate particular attitudes and qualities. In order to make the project more sustainable, Aleimar is planning to commission the girls tailoring the production of bags of Christmas.

A special thanks to all people who believe in this project and contribute to give a valuable opportunity to these girls!

Good job!
