The aim of this project is to promote comprehensive health of 120 women and their children between 0 and 5 years old from Villa 21-24 of Barracas, the biggest slum in Buenos Aires City. The project proposes to work with 4 specific areas: pregnant women and their children during the first year of life, prevent cases of malnutrition and undernutrition, work on the prevention of gender-based violence, and stimulate play and early stimulation in children.
In Argentina, two out of three - over 62% of children are poor or deprived of fundamental rights (according to UNICEF). A child who lives in a shantytown has 47% more deficit in health than children who live in regular neighborhoods. Pilares works closely with over 120 pregnant women and mothers with children in early childhood to help them access better development opportunities and comprehensive health.
We work with mothers and pregnant women to help them to have a healthy pregnancy and early bonding. Women are trained to battle undernutrition and how to strengthen their possibilities. We also work directly with their children, from ages 0 to 5, observing their integral development and teaching mothers how to support their development through playing. Finally, we work with women who suffer from gender-based violence, to break the circle of violence.
We will be working with over 120 women each year, aiding them to break violent circles, helping children achieve their full potential, and mothers to have healthy pregnancies, therefore preventing potential illnesses and developing healthy bonds with their newborns.
