Vulnerable families in Lebanon are suffering from the price rocketing of essential food items as well as long hours' power outage leading many to skip their basic meals. Therefore AICA used the Global Giving's donation to rehabilitate the community "House of Wisdom Kitchen - HOWK" and is selling hot cooked meals for underprivileged families who cannot afford to buy for 0.15USD$/meal making beneficiaries buy, even with minimal cost, instead of having meals for free preserving their dignity.
AICA has conducted a door to door house hold assessment tackling food security and negative coping mechanisms. Out of 44 identified and assessed HH, 23 were deemed eligible for food assistance amounting to 150 individuals. Now, and as the situation is worsening, 400 families are awaiting to be assessed which might lead to the need of 2000 meals per day assuming AICA will cover only one of the 3 basic meals.. This is beyond AICA can cover alone and here is where we are asking for your help.
This project targets underprivileged families who cannot afford to buy essential food or even make their own meals. AICA is providing the meal for a subsidized cost that is 0.15USD $ where in fact it costs AICA to make it 1.5USD$. AICA is covering this difference as a community response and as a sense of humanity. The need is huge.. the urge is high.. AICA decided to sell those meals with this minimal cost so the person can preserve his/her dignity and not feel he/she is taking for free.
Since its here to stay, HOWK is opening its doors to public too (families who didn't pass the assessment will pay regular prices), allowing the kitchen to become sustainable and serve families in need on the long term as the money generated from its regular sales will be a compensation for the subsidizing process. These donations will cover the deficit generated due to selling the meals for only 3000LBP(0.15$) which real cost is 30,000 to 40,000 LBP(1.5-2$)/meal of 500 Grams.
