Our attention now turns to supporting Tonga's immediate, early and long term recovery from the devastating volcanic eruption and tsunami.
The current estimates state that approximately 85,000 people have been affected by the recent volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami, which accounts for 84 per cent of the total population of Tonga.
Australian Red Cross is working with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and Tonga Red Cross to design a 24 month recovery operation, which will aim to meet the recovery needs of the most vulnerable 17,000 people through: Emergency shelter provision; Cash and voucher assistance; Disease prevention and psychological support; Water, sanitisation and hygiene; Continuing response operations; and strengthening Tonga Red Cross' preparedness for future events.
Our support for Tonga is informed by a locally led response and appropriate to the needs and capacities on the ground. Australian Red Cross has been working with the Tonga Red Cross for several years as one of its priority country partners in the region. We will continue to work closely with Tonga Red Cross and standby ready to respond to the humanitarian needs.
