In South Africa, many girls grow up facing poverty, unsafe environments and gender inequality. Through the Global Girl Leadership Initiative, delivered with Skateistan South Africa, 100 girls will join a three-month programme to build leadership skills and lead community action. Girls learn to speak with confidence and support one another. They gain the tools to create positive change in their communities. We aim to raise $2,500 to support this programme and help girls become confident leaders.
South Africa continues to face deep social and economic inequalities that affect many communities. Many girls in marginalised areas experience poverty, limited safe spaces and high levels of gender-based violence, substance abuse and crime. Without opportunities to develop confidence and leadership skills, many girls struggle to speak out or participate in shaping solutions. Creating supportive spaces for girls to lead can help change this.
Through the Global Girl Leadership Initiative, girls attend 11 weekly sessions led by local women facilitators. They explore leadership, discuss challenges affecting their communities and design solutions. The programme ends with a girl-led community event, where girls lead activities and conversations that raise awareness and inspire action. Girls also build confidence, teamwork and communication skills. These experiences help them see themselves as leaders in their communities.
Girls will gain confidence, leadership skills and the ability to speak out on issues affecting their communities. As they organise events and inspire others, they challenge harmful norms and encourage positive change. Over time, these young leaders help build safer, more inclusive communities and inspire other girls to lead. They also become role models for younger girls in their neighbourhoods. These leadership skills can shape their education, careers and future community involvement.
