Challenge

FGM as a culture violates the dignity and human rights of women and girls. FGM prevalence rate among the Abagusii is at 84% against the reducing national rate of 21%. Previous strategies used to End FGM were ineffective, non inclusive, are punitive, communicated by outsiders and the mode of delivery of solutions has been doing harm to survivors and perpetrators of FGM thereby making the practice go underground as well as discriminating and re-traumatizing survivors of FGM.

Solution

HFAW will train 50 youth leaders from 5 sub counties in Nyamira county namely Manga, Nyamira South, Nyamira North, Borabu and Masaba North Sub Counties to accelerate abandonment of FGM . The youth leaders who will be trained using Popular Education model and Social Change Communication Skills to End FGM will be Anti-FGM ambassadors in their communities and will initiate dialogue to reach over 2000 youth in school as well as youth at home using positive messages to End FGM via various media.

Long-Term Impact

The 50 trained youth Anti FGM ambassadors who are currently youth leaders will use the knowledge gained to reach their communities and influence their followers to End FGM. A youth network/movement against FGM will be created in Nyamira. The movement will lead the county being declared a safe space against FGM. The movement will also give voice to the youth and bargain power for county level legislation and consideration for support to End FGM.
