Girls Face Growing Risks of Online Harassment

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you for the attention shown toward the Train 500 School Girls to Combat Online Harassment project. At this moment, the project has not yet received financial contributions, so the planned training workshops and mentorship sessions have not started.

Across many schools in Nigeria, girls increasingly use mobile phones and the internet for learning, communication, and social interaction. While digital platforms offer many opportunities, they also expose young users to risks such as cyberbullying, harassment, and the misuse of personal information.

Many girls do not know how to recognize harmful online behavior or how to protect themselves when harassment occurs. When abuse happens through social media or messaging platforms, victims often feel isolated and unsure about how to report it. This situation can affect their confidence, mental health, and even their willingness to continue participating in digital learning activities.

This project plans to train 500 school girls in practical digital safety skills. Through structured workshops, participants will learn how to protect personal information, recognize online abuse, report harassment, and support friends who may face similar challenges.

Mentors and facilitators will also guide discussions about responsible internet use, respectful communication online, and ways to create safer digital spaces among peers. These sessions aim to help girls feel more confident while using technology for education and communication.

When girls understand how to navigate the internet safely, they can continue learning and interacting online without fear. Knowledge about digital safety can also spread among classmates, helping create a more supportive and respectful online environment.

We appreciate the interest already shown in this initiative and remain hopeful that support will grow so that these training sessions can begin soon. With the help of caring supporters, many girls can gain the knowledge and confidence needed to stay safe in digital spaces.

Sincerely,

Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
