Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is a global movement of university students organizing on their campuses and beyond to ensure that publicly funded medicines and medical innovations are affordable and accessible to the public. This project will support up to 10 students from Brazil, India, Europe and North America to attend international advocacy, activism and leadership trainings and events to advance access to affordable medicines for all.
10 million people die every year because they do not have access to the life-saving medicines they need to survive. Today, this problem impacts at a global level as medicines are priced so high by pharmaceutical corporations that people and their governments cannot afford them. Over half of these life-saving innovations are developed with tax-payer money via research at universities and yet, they remain largely unaffordable or inaccessible to many.
With chapters in more than 20 countries across the world, UAEM students work to influence policies on their own campuses and at other national and international fora to ensure that products of publicly funded biomedical research and development are made available to and affordable for all.
Students, being at the heart of university research, are uniquely positioned to push for normative change in their universities and research institutions. This project will help empower 10 students from Brazil, India, Europe and North America to take action on their campuses through creative actions to help ensure that publicly funded medicines are affordable to the public who paid for them in the first place.
