Teachers for Rural Futures Accepts New Students

By Stacy Dry Lara & Alexa Grace | GWI Executive Director & Intern, respectively

Dear Graduate Women International Donors:

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated female teacher challenges in rural Uganda where a significant number of girls remain out of school. There are critically low numbers of qualified female teachers in Uganda, currently about 30% in secondary schools, with even lower numbers in rural areas.

Despite continued pandemic challenges, Graduate Women International's (GWI) Teachers for Rural Futures programme is in the financial position, because of our generous donors like you, to offer the opportunity for three young women from ruralnorthern Uganda to obtain their teaching degree. Our programme aims, no matter the challenges, toincrease the number of female teachers in rural Uganda. These new teachers will be mentors and positive influencers to school-aged girls to remain in school. By supporting additional female teachers, your donation will be facilitating the safer access to a number of girls in rural Uganda who would otherwise be forced to stay out of school.

Many families in rural communities favour boys when investing in education. When girls have female teachers, they have a role model to look up to and their parents are more likely to feel comfortable sending their daughters to school. Women and girls with an education are less likely to marry young and more likely to lead healthy, productive lives. They earn a higher income, participate in decision-making, and build better futures for themselves and their families.

To date, the Teachers for Rural Futures programme has successfully sponsored five young women from rural district of Buyende Uganda to complete their studies in the field of education at Makerere University in Kampala. This has been possible thanks to the donations from our GlobalGiving supporters and the grants programme from the City of Geneva.

GWI continues to work tirelessly to make a positive impact on women’s and girls’ education. We need your help too. You can help the GWI Teachers for Rural Futures programme by generously donating:

  •  25 dollars per month to provide books for one student teacher
  • 75 dollars to provide tuition for one student teacher for one month
  • 150 dollars to provide tuition for one student teacher for two months
  • 900 dollars to train one student teacher for one year

Contributions of any amount make meaningfulimpacts on the lives of our student teachers at Makerere University in Kampala. We also appreciate you reaching out to your circle of friends and organisations and invite them to donate as well. Your contributions matter, and we are sincerely grateful.
