Training Local Barbers to Prevent STI Spread

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Training 100 Traditional Barbers on STI Prevention project. Your donations show concern for community health and for reducing everyday practices that put children, women, and adults at risk of infection.

In areas such as Karu, Jikwoyi, Mararaba, and Nyanya, many traditional barbers still rely on shared knives and razors. These tools are used repeatedly without proper cleaning and, in some cases, are also involved in harmful cutting practices affecting girls. Because many barbers lack basic health knowledge, infections can spread easily through what should be simple grooming services.

This project is planned to train 100 traditional barbers on how infections spread and how proper hygiene can prevent disease. The training will focus on cleaning tools between customers, safe handling of equipment, and understanding health risks linked to shared blades. Each trained barber will receive a rechargeable clipper, spirit, and basic hygiene materials. Simple posters will also be displayed in shops to educate customers and reinforce safer practices.

While donations have been received, the amount raised so far does not yet allow training sessions and material distribution to begin. Additional support is needed so preparations, equipment purchase, and community training can move forward.

By supporting this project, donors help reduce infection risks in everyday settings and protect vulnerable groups who are often exposed without knowing the danger. We will continue to share updates as progress is made.

Thank you for your continued support,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
