Challenge

Maternal mortality refers to those deaths which are caused by complications due to pregnancy or childbirth. These complications may be experienced during pregnancy or delivery itself, or may occur up to 42 days following childbirth. For each woman who succumbs to maternal death, many more will suffer injuries, infections, and disabilities brought about by pregnancy or childbirth complications, such as obstetrics fistula. In most cases, however, maternal mortality and disability can be prevented

Solution

Since most maternal deaths occur during delivery and postpartum period, emergency obstetric care, skilled birth attendants, postpartum care, and transportation to medical facilities if complications arise are all necessary components of strategies to reduce maternal mortality. The project specifically aims to improve the quality of maternal and child care at the primary level of health care (community level and health posts). The concept is to build the capacity of both community health Nurses.

Long-Term Impact

(15) community health nurses trained and equipped in pre- and postnatal care as well as sexual and reproductive health At least 160 safe births conducted by community health nurses after completion of the project (after 12 months) At least 160 home births assisted by a community health nurses after completion of the project At least 12 counselling meetings with trained community health nurses and pregnant women after completion of the project At least 320 home visits by CHNs
