Summary

In the past year, our donors helped us train skilled artisans and grow wild silk production from a trickle into a stream, transforming Malagasy lives, empowering women and inspiring a community. This year, CPALI is setting the bar even higher and increasing livelihood accessibility for the most vulnerable communities with raffia weaving. Join CPALI in transforming the lives of rural artisans in Madagascar by supporting technical skills and training for wild silk production and raffia weaving.

Challenge

The future of Madagascar's rainforest is heavily dependent on the communities that live in and around these areas. Resource exploitation, unsustainable farming practices and lack of alternative livelihoods lead to the erosion of forest resources. CPALI designs income-generating activities that support native ecosystems and engage communities in the protection of their forests.

Solution

Farmers and their families need new opportunities to process and transform farmed products into marketable products. This project provides job opportunities, training, and teaches communities how to farm and process endemic silk and plant fibers. We train skilled artisans to develop new products and connect them to international markets that return higher value than those sold on local markets.

Long-Term Impact

This program will invest in training programs for the women's artisans groups including the use of natural dye alternatives and product design and marketing. As a non-profit, success in this arena means a greater return for the local community and continued investment in sustainable livelihoods and park preservation. We will also be developing natural byproducts of the current silk program and supporting education and outreach for both children and adults.
