So far in 2018, 10,100 adolescent girls have benefited from AIL’s Learning Center education. They are taking classes in a variety of subjects ranging from literacy and math to sewing and computers.AIL classes also include messages about health, democracy, laws, elections, women’s rights and leadership and sometimes some words of English. Discussions are sometimes held on topics relevant at the time such as what is in the news like seasonal illnesses or coming up soon such as an election.

The idea is to educate these girls but also to inform them of the world around them, how they can keep themselves healthy and what opportunities there are in the wider society. Sewing and computing provide marketable skills while leadership lessons enable the girls to grow and develop their own capacity and learn how to expand their role in community.

“Khadija is a student in English class. She had a lot of problems in understanding the English language in school classes. After joining the class at the center, her problems were solved and she caught up with her peers. She even teaches English to her sisters and brothers at home. Khadija has been a role model for other students to take action and try something different to improve their performance in a subject that they are having problems with.”

AIL’s Learning Centers (LCs) give refugee and Internally Displaced Persons the opportunity to learn many subjects. They often start out with tailoring/sewing and Fast Track Literacy classes, then as their confidence grows they take on new challenges. One of the most popular classes offered is tailoring because these refugee women need to earn money. So far in 2018, 1,054 females (491 adolescent girls) are studying tailoring in Herat LCs and 376 in LCs in Kabul and other provinces.

AIL tailoring students are grateful to be able to learn a useful skill which they will use to make clothing for their families, saving money and to earn money as a small business. Some students are able to fast track through tailoring class and become excellent tailors very quickly. They gain a skill but also a sense of accomplishment in completing the course and now being able to contribute to the economic situation of the family by starting a small home business.

Amena comes from a very poor refugee family she has this to say, “I have lived in a very hard situation my whole my life. My father is the only one who earns money for our family and only enough for food. I have no older brother to help my father and I have four sisters. I felt hopeless before joining the free tailoring class at the AIL center. After only a few classes I learned lots of tailoring skills and started to sew clothes for my sisters. Now I am able to sew every type of clothing. I have my own tailoring business and earn money. I am very happy about it and that I can help my father with the expenses of our daily life. I proved that there isn't any difference between boys and girls if the way is paved for them to improve themselves. Thanks to AIL who changed my dark life and the lives of thousands of people like me."

Learning an income generating skill helps with family finances but also raises women’s self- esteem and their standing within the family. Husbands appreciate their wives ability to learn new skills even at an older age and are now seen as able to help with the family economics.

AIL’s 44 Learning Centers (LCs) are providing a full program of classes for adolescent girls in their areas. Herat’s Learning Centers (LCs) give women and girls the opportunity to learn many subjects. One of the most popular is literacy. So far in 2018, 3,335 students are studying literacy in Herat (2,190 are female, 1,231 adolescent girls).

One center reported that, “One of our Literacy Class graduates started her own literacy class in her home. A number of neighborhood illiterate girls joined the class and she teaches them what she learned doing the course at the center. She is very happy in her new life as a teacher. She said it is the result of the efforts of those who taught her and Dr. Yacoobi and AIL for founding centers that provide such opportunity to people. “I was able to help myself and now can teach others to read and write. I am learning more and study to a higher level so I can help others do the same.”

Learning to read is life changing for women and girls as it helps them with daily tasks and social interaction as well as improving their self- esteem and their standing in the family and with their husbands and fathers. It is the gateway skill that leads to learning in other subjects and the development of the capacity to maintain a small income generating business. Girls often need to improve literacy levels to regain entry into school with their peer group after an absence of years. The classes are designed to get them ready for school if that is what they want.
