Help 450 Rwandans to Become Peacebuilders

Summary
This reporting period highlights key activities carried out under the project “Help 450 Rwandans to Become Peacebuilders.” The focus was on strengthening community-based peacebuilding through training in Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), trauma healing, counseling, and mediation.
A total of 32 participants from Gasabo District, Rutunga Sector were trained, including 22 eminent community members and 10 Genocide survivors. In addition, a refresher mediation training was conducted for 12 facilitators in Kigali.
The trainings contributed to emotional healing, strengthened peacebuilding skills, and increased community capacity to manage conflicts peacefully.
What Happened During This Period
1. AVP Basic Training
We conducted Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) basic training for 32 participants in Rutunga Sector. The sessions focused on:
Nonviolent communication
Conflict transformation
Building trust within communities
Personal responsibility in peacebuilding
2. Trauma Healing & Counseling Training
As Rwanda approached the Genocide Against the Tutsi in 1994 Commemoration period, participants were trained in:
Trauma awareness and management
Basic counseling skills
Emotional support techniques
Community care during commemoration
This was particularly important for supporting Genocide survivors, who often experience renewed trauma during this time.
3. Refresher Training on Mediation
Date: April 16, 2026
Location: Classic Hotel, Kigali
Participants: 12 facilitators
The refresher session focused on:
Strengthening mediation techniques
Practical conflict resolution tools
Facilitator confidence and effectiveness
What Were the Results?
Emotional Healing and Wellbeing
Participants shared powerful testimonies indicating that:
They feel emotionally released
They feel happier and relieved
They gained tools to cope with trauma
Increased Peacebuilding Capacity
Participants are now actively promoting peace and reconciliation in their communities
Improved ability to handle conflicts nonviolently
Stronger support systems for survivors during commemoration
Empowered Facilitators
Facilitators who attended the refresher training reported that they:
Feel reenergized and motivated
Feel empowered to continue serving communities
Have enhanced mediation and training skills
Challenges
Limited resources restricted the number of participants we could reach
High demand for trauma healing support during the commemoration period
Need for continuous follow-up and mentorship for trained participants
What’s Next?
Expand training to reach more beneficiaries toward the goal of 450 peacebuilders
Provide ongoing mentorship and support to trained participants
Strengthen community-based mediation structures
Continue trauma healing programs, especially during sensitive periods
